Just bought it today - liked SH3 so this should be better from the videos I have seen.

Hope my computer can handle it :!: Will find out soon.

With a bit of fiddling it worked - better on low settings of course. Manual is useless. Can't read the control settings and have to press F1 all the time for help.

Yeah.. they show pictures.. and you can barely read what it says.. I don't have a magnifying glass handy to read the manual so I use F1 alot too

Yeah press load and then go for a 2 miles hike - never seen a slower game to load but that might be my computer.

First time I loaded it up.. it took me 10 minutes just to get up the ladder to talk to the captain.. I wonder if there's a way to turn all the walking off.. personally I prefer the old way without having to walk around

Yeah mate so do I - have SH3 - I have video on low and the cursor still sticks a lot. It's very laggy. The charts are not good - I cannot see how to zoom in to see the water depth - is not shown on the big map - at least I sank 4 boats including one with my stern tube. I have it on easy at the moment.

You only have to look at the forums to see how unhappy people are with this game. Actually their forums don't always work either.

This is the slowest game load time I have ever seen - my computer is above minimum specs and the game is almost unplayable - I see from the forums that many others have super comps compared to mine and they are having problems. I saw that mentioned disabling one of the cores on dual processors but I haven't a clue about that.

RtB

This is what I found on the forums

after you lanched SH5 press ALT+TAB, go in task manager, find SH5.exe, right click on it and select "set affinity" and deselect the number of CPUs you want disabled.
After that you have to select also "set prioriy" at High (not real time, it's too much, other task can have problems)

EDIT: I just set priority at high for this game and that helped with the cursor problem. Not game to fiddle with the dual CPUs.

Please someone answer with your experience and hints. :(

EDIT: I really can't afford to buy games (not any since 2142) and was terribly disappointed in this one - $90 and not worth $10 - wish I could get my money back.

If you whinge hard enough to Ubisoft I'm sure you can get one, especially if you reference related consumer laws which they would have infringed on judging by what you're saying. Although I've been whinging to them myself on a different issue lately and found them to be arrogant and unhelpful.

I'm going to hold off on judgement for a bit until a patch comes out with the hopes it solves some of the issues there are

Hey all,

I'm glad I didn't rush out to buy this.

Below is a review I found that seems to be spot on with what i've heard from others.

For now I would save your money.

I tried turning off one core of my CPU and it crashed within 5 minutes. Still as laggy as hell, takes so long to load and is virtually unplayable.

Ah yesterday it decided to stop - goes as far as 1st loading screen then crashes to desktop. I put a ticket into tech support. Asked for my money back.

Put in a ticket on 16th march - got a reply from an Admin on the forums who checked with their Tech Support - sent the DXDIAG with the ticket. The ether is clear - still no reply from Tech Support (but they must be getting 1000s) and the game still doesn't work.

I have it running now Vige - reasonably well - just have to save a lot if you use the time compression which you do use a lot. That also helps with performance as it sort of files the data away - less cursor drag (lag) now. I'd sink ships and then it used to crash the computer or freeze it. Took a lot of screen shots (I thought) of sinking ships but it is Ctrl F11 to do so not PrtScn as they say in the help - I forgot to turn on F Lock so I got nothing :(

The function buttons work but not like SH3 for example - they do different things like sub controls.. There is a new patch out on 12th April which will fix some things.

F1 brings up the keyboard layout, F2 is external camera, F3 is event Cam etc some don't even work as yet - the help says prnscrn for a screen shot where it actually is cntrl F11

There are a lot of mods available to fix things but I have not downloaded any as yet - will wait for the patch.

The walking is Ok but can be a bit of a nuisance especially up the ladder.

The SH5 Forums are good.

BTW this is what one of their Tech Support guys posted in a forum

Are you guys using a dual display setup? If so, try to completely disable the second monitor. Make sure it is set to using only one display in the Nvidia Control Panel.
Simply turning the monitor off would not have the same result. So, make sure the second monitor is disabled in the Nvidia Control Panel.
If you guys have an SLI setup, disable this too so that it is only using one video card.

My response was:

With all due respect mate, that shouldn't be necessary - I have never had any problems with any other game which required that course of action.

Frankly one should not have to do such adjustments to have a game work - it is very inconvenient.

Update - the 1.2 patch will not be out until about early May - like a month late - a lot of the modders have fixed things as well
but I have not done any of those. You have to turn them off before patching it.

I am having some success now with the game as long as I keep the room freezing to keep the graphics card cool - otherwise I can get crashes. I just put on winter clothes
and a hot water bottle on the chair.

UPDATE: Patch 1.2 came out eventually fixed a few things - not sure what - using some mods created by others for a better look and functionality but the Vanilla is quite OK.
Some of the mods introduce bugs as well. See pic:

Just a little update. It still has problems for some. Ubi tech support still come up with crap. "Turn off your anti virus and firewall, use MSCONFIG to stop all start up items, cannot use SLI graphics card, make sure your temp files (which the game creates) are all cleared.

I have a new machine with an EAH5770 1GB card in it. If you read our tech support column there is a thread on my problems there.

I now run the ATI catalyst control centre (CCC) for my EAH5770 on my 2nd monitor and watch the temp and activity settings go through the roof at times.
Before it crashes the computer, I simply go to the nav map which almost instantly drops the temp from 90 to 65 and the activity from 98 to around 35 - that's with the fan set on 100%.

The game is a good game but I am not the only one having crash and CTD problems. Using the mods can make a difference as there are bugs in them too. After patch 1.2 Ubi has not advised that there will be any more which are needed. They think it seems that everyone should use the mods created by others to fix the problems.

Another way I help it all BTW is run the aircon so cold that I have to put my Antarctic gear (5 dogs) on to survive - that keeps the whole ambient temp down and the card works cooler.
I have about 5 fans I think in the case and it is a very well ventilated case.

It is a very addictive game but there are certain areas where it is just simply wrong - eg patrol areas nominated by the game bear no relation to where the ships you need to sink for a mission are.

You can drive around for days in game time without being able to compete your mission. I have one with a little bit to do to finish a whole campaign and still can't after several days real time playing. It becomes boring then.

Yea i fuckin hate having to spend hours IRL cruising round looking for that one ship that ends up no where near the actual patrol area marked.

Hi Guys,

I've recently upgraded to a new PC, but haven't bothered to reinstall SH5 yet. I kind of lost interest early in 2010 due to various technical hassles and the fact that it had become so "arcady" compared with SH4. (Not to mention becoming totally engrossed in ARMA2...)

Can someone tell me if they've established feature parity with SH4 yet? i.e. does the TDC actually work properly etc. etc.?

I checked the Ubisoft website, but it seems that they haven't released any patches or updates since the initial bugfixes required to patch the poor quality product they initially shipped.
