Lightbulb Planetside 2 (MMO - FPS)

Planetside 2 - Death is no excuse trailer

Planetside 2 is a new and upcoming MMOFPS by Sony Online entertainment, with a release date of late 2012 / 2013. Its defining feature is its massive scale combined arms combat, with infantry, armor and aircraft combining into a maelstrom of destruction that dwarfs even the largest games of Battlefield 3, with battles of hundreds (!) of players shooting simultaneously. It will be a free to play game: do NOT let that turn you off, as it is one of the most stunning and intriguing games i have seen in a long time.

The basic premise of PS2 gameplay is territorial conflict. There are three factions: The Terran Republic, who are the imperialist earth government goons, the New Conglomerate, who are the feisty corporate rebels, and the Vanu Sovereignty, who are the alien technological worshippers. The game launches with three continents, each about 350 km^2 large. Each continent is divided into about 50 control zones, and the factions all start with a "home zone" at each corner. The premise of the conflict is that each faction tries to capture as many territories on each continent as possible, and in the process come into massive conflict with each other. Each control zone has specific capture points within it, not unlike traditional capture points within a battlefield map. Control of a majority of these capture points gains your faction control over that zone.

Each zone provides a flow of resources to the controlling faction. There are four resources available. Auraxium is used for unlocking vehicle and weapon upgrades and variants, whereas the other three resources are used to call in vehicles and MAX assault mechs. Each player has their own personal pool of resources that gets replenished at the rate that their captured territories supply them. They key gameplay implications of the three resources is that calling in vehicles with different loadouts will cost different kinds of resource: A fighter aircraft kitted out for air superiority will cost (for example) 50 of resource 1 and 50 of resource 2. But the same aircraft equipped with anti-armor rocket pods will cost 50 of resource 1 and 50 of resource 3 (instead of 2). So, if your faction strategically picks their targets in the territorial conflict, you can in theory also be able control what forces enemies are able to bring to bear, and control your field of conflict.

Here is a video that explains the territorial conflict mechanics (it drags on a bit)

Conflict in Planetside 2 never ends: it keeps happening regardless whether you are online or off. Another thing you have to factor in about planetside 2 is the day / night cycle, which is currently rumored to run at 10 hour "days".

Advancement in Planetside 2 runs in what they call a "certification system". These are skill points that you can earn during gameplay via in game actions (capturing points, repairing vehicles, killing people, etc) and while away (much in the vein of EVE online's skill system). These cert points can be spent in different skill trees to improve your character. For example, if you spend points in the squad leader tree, you can reduce the respawn time of squadmates, unlock / improve equipment such as drop pod beacons. Or as a medic, decrease the revive cooldown or improve heal rate of your medic tool.

Now for the part directly relevant to us: I would like to start a AEF Planetside Division, high command permitting. It will run under the AEF banner, and recruitment will be done in-game, with potential participants having to have read and accepted our code of conduct to be accepted into the outfit. I have learnt much being the 2IC of our SWTOR division, and i hope to bring that experience into Planetside, and let us all have a awesome time.

In-game Outfit Name: [AEF] Australasian Expeditionary Forces
    Motto: Strength, Honor, Air Superiority

The Planetside 2 Beta is slated to start on Tuesday: 1st of August. Sign up on www.planetside2.com, and wait for your beta invite!

Apparently they are looking at running an Australian server too, which is fantastic news. Keeping my eyes on this one.

They haven't given out the specifics yet, but I looks like it will be free-to-play. They will probably charge for cosmetic and convenience items ie. unlocking gear at a quicker rate. I'd be surprised if they made pay-for only gear like weapons or vehicles, the most successful F2P games have a point unlock system where you just simply pay to unlock faster so I think they'll probably go that route.

im still curious and therefore undecided about the gameplay itself but if a team is forming for this game im definitely a potential member

Hit the nail RIGHT on the head. To clarify, gear and progression is unlocked via a "certification points" system. As you play the game (and away) you earn cert points and those are spent on what you would like to play.

As a note: SOE has said that their targets for character progression is to have a maxed out character to be about ~18% more "powerful" than someone who has not dumped certs into anything, and is adamant that this is a skill based FPS above all else. This difference is refreshingly small compared to other MMOs (think what 5 levels will do for you in WoW...), and also means you start playing right away as opposed to waiting for the "real" game at the level cap that other traditional MMOs have.

From what I've seen, even if you do end up a lil more powerful because you have more weapon choices / perks / whatever unlocked, the role you play would still be quite specialised so you can't become a dominant force on your own. It certainly will still be a matter of who is the better side at getting a team together to take points and covering all the roles needed.

Well I'm downloading the beta now, I ended up buying their Alpha Squad / Founders package: http://www.planetside2.com/alpha-squad

Certainly spent more money on worse things (*cough* Cliffs of Dover *cough*), there is no NDA now either so I'll post my thoughts as I put some time in.

Played a little myself and will play some more. Dont mind it so far.

EU servers are laggy so ill give some of my issues 2 that.
Having probs with fps but ill give that 2 it being a BETA. ( Yes I updated everything and my rig is decent enough )
If the AEF wants a real presence it will take numbers. I see a real potential for alliances between clans which could be fun. Who has a few hundred players spare nowdays!!!!

Overall I can see why its getting some hype. But I disagree with cookie on player differences due to upgrades. Even a 5 percent advantage to a well tuned player can mean the difference between dieing or wiping out an enemy squad. When players are at roughly the same skill level a few points makes all the difference. But this is an "fps mmo" so Its to be expected.

It seems 2 take a fair few bullets to kill someone, and vehicle mounted weapons r no exception. Remindes me a little of BF BC2 in that sense.

Prob my biggest issue atm is unit cohesion. Its so damn big and its easy to get lost from the main squad. However I am made 2 believe that they intend on improving that.

US West servers will give best ping for Aussies due to the much more direct fibre connection to the US. I haven't noticed any lag issues at all which is very impressive. The game is pretty CPU demanding at the moment, but that will get better as they get time to make optimisations. I can get 60FPS in the open areas, but inside buildings it drops to 40. AMD CPUs have some more issues at the moment than Intel it seems.

I'm really enjoying the game. It'll get even better as the capture mechanics get tweaked so that points take longer to capture.

As of right now, there are a few issues with the game. I believe that these problems are inherent because it is in beta and of the relatively inexperienced playerbase. Voice communication is not yet fully working, with people having problems with it at times. But i believe that once the code gets fixed these issues will resolve themselves. The lag can range from unnoticeable to downright unplayable depending on the iteration of net code they implement, which seems to change every week or so.

But so far, having an absolute blast. I am thinking of making characters on a us-west server so that as more of our members get beta codes, we can have a better, more cohesive and latency-free experience.

    People who are playing:
    Tovarich Cookie
    FoxSerge
    Kazaar
    Saberseed
    (spare account)

    Phazon (play with us!)

I don't understand why any of you are playing on the Europe servers. You'll get double the ping there, no wonder you are complaining about lag issues.

I'm playing on US West 02 at the moment, as US West 01 can get full and not let you login on your character to play there and as there is no queue system atm that can be a right royal pain.

There's going to be a character wipe this week, probably to make way for the rollout of the certification system: http://forums.station.sony.com/ps2/i...3/#post-273449
