Question One stonkin' great Elite: Dangerous info and resources thread.

    Purpose

Greetings, fellow Commanders, and prospective space fans !

There's a few different threads on the AEF forums pertaining to Elite: Dangerous already, but here's an attempt to try to get everything into one location.

If you find something you think should be included, please feel free to post, and it can be added to the appropriate post near the top of the thread.

The opening posts in the thread will contain the following sections:

    Introduction

    From the ED website..
    THE GALAXY IS YOURS

Elite: Dangerous is the spectacular new sequel in the Elite series of games.

Head for the stars, take a ship and trade, bounty-hunt, pirate or assassinate your way across the galaxy in this massively multiplayer online space adventure

It's an awe inspiring, beautiful, vast place; with 400 billion star systems, planets, moons and asteroid fields just waiting to be explored and exploited.
    From the ED Wiki..
The origin of the series is Elite, the genre defining open world sandbox, space adventure, trading and combat simulator first released in 1984.

It spawned two sequels Frontier: Elite II in 1993 and Frontier: First Encounters (Elite III) in 1995, which already attempted to simulate a realistic Milky Way galaxy

with realistic star systems and seamless freeform interplanetary and atmospheric flight and landing on moving planets, with realistic day/night cycles.

There's real pedigree here. Of the original game...
Elite is a space trading video game, originally published by Acornsoft in 1984 for the BBC Micro and Acorn Electron computers. The game's title derives from one of the player's goals of raising their combat rating to the exalted heights of "Elite". It was written and developed by David Braben and Ian Bell, who had met while they were both undergraduates at Jesus College, Cambridge. Non-Acorn versions of the game were published by Firebird, Imagineer and Hybrid Technology.

Elite was one of the first home computer games to use wire-frame 3D graphics with hidden line removal. Another novelty was the inclusion of The Dark Wheel, a novella by Robert Holdstock which influenced new players with insight into the moral and legal codes to which they might aspire.

Elite's open-ended game model, advanced game engine and revolutionary 3D graphics ensured that it was ported to virtually every contemporary home computer system, and earned it a place as a classic and a genre maker in gaming history. Elite was a hugely influential game, serving as a model for more recent games such as Space Rogue, Eve Online, Freelancer, Jumpgate, Infinity: The Quest for Earth, Wing Commander: Privateer, Pardus, the Escape Velocity series and the X series of space trading games.

    System Specifications

Elite: Dangerous will be released on Windows PC and three months later on Apple Macintosh computers.
The Beta is available only on Windows. You will be able to download the released game on Windows and/or Macintosh computers once it is available, at no extra charge.

    • Quad Core CPU ( 4 x 2Ghz is a reasonable minimum)

Top stuff Tassie, and well laid out. (very pro)

Is it possible to include it's various costs?... and form a list of AEF members partaking already in this (ATM beta) ?

It'll be a bit of a mess for a while, I guess, but over time it'll work out I hope. I only bought the beta some weeks ago, and am already a bit confused as to all the different "products" that have been, and will be, offered.

Indeed, a list of members is what I had in mind (AEF and ED section), so anyone who wishes to be included in the list should let me know.

Of course if this game becomes active enough, this thread will be moved into a new ED forums.

Playing with Kastor last night, we experimented with using the new FSD wakes to follow someone. He found this video showing the technique, supposedly without a wake scanner..

I'm a little confused however. When we tried it, we couldn't get it to work - in our instance, we were following the other person into an Unidentified Signal.

In this video, the bounty hunter is following a wanted Asp in supercruise to Chango Dock. Watch when the Asp drops into the station area. The bounty hunter targets the low energy FSD wake left by the Asp, seemingly successfully, and it's details appear in his far left panel as expected, but the holographic representation of the wake does not show. Now look at the yellow marker for Chango Dock as he approaches, still in supercruise. It shows Chango Dock as being the target (a 3/4 yellow circle surrounding it), not the FSD wake, even though the wake has the customary triangular icon around it.

When he drops into the area himself, many seconds after the Asp, he looks for the ship and can't seem to find it. Then, he realises that it's behind him.

I'm not so sure his technique works at all... it seems that he simply dropped into the station area instead.

Posted these thoughts as I was going to include this video as a "tutorial", but now I'm not so sure it shows what the maker claims.

New update... v2.06. Only took a few moments to update, so I assume it's only small.

    Beta 3 I can't wait. 28th OCT 14.

    Multiple Ships in Beta 3
We are delighted to confirm that the feature where you can own multiple ships, which we announced a few weeks ago when launching our pre-order Mercenary Pack, will be included in Beta 3 on October 28th.

This will let you have any number of ships ‘parked’ at any number of shipyards, rather than having to part-exchange them.

When coupled with the enhanced ship outfitting and mission systems from Beta 2, you can see how this will really expand your possibilities in Elite: Dangerous.
How you distribute your personal fleet is up to you; you could concentrate them all in one area, or have them strategically distributed around the galaxy.

There are no restrictions on the number or type of ships you can have or how you outfit them other than the in-game money you need to buy them.

If for example you are a die-hard Cobra fan, you can have multiple Cobras loaded out differently for different mission profiles, trading, exploration, piracy etc. as the situation or your mood demands.
Conversely if you want to experience the advantages a range of different ships bring you, you can keep every ship you buy in the game and mix and match the capability of an Anaconda, the combat agility of an Eagle, the range of an Asp Explorer and the profit from a Lakon Type 9.

Or you can do any combination of these, owning multiple types of any or all ships.

Promo pic for the premiere of Elite: Dangerous at the Imperial War Museum, Duxford, on 22NOV14.

There's a couple of silhouettes there that I'm not sure about.

    DH Tiger Moth
    Westland Lysander ?
    English Electric Canberra
Not a Strikemaster, Sea Vixen, Jet Provost, or Buccaneer.. ???
    BAC/Aerospatiale Concorde
    BAe Harrier
    Faulcon DeLacy Cobra Mk III

    Thanks Col K.

They've put their PR hype into overdrive with this one.

Advised to skip the first 12mins.. The new MP footage is at 56mins., which shows some cool effects of a huge ship jumping in/out.

Yeah, combat areas seem to be scarce now with the Gamma.

Gamma 2.0 out now. Requires a new client installer. Click here to download it, or look for the link in your old installer.

It also sends a security email to your chosen address requiring confirmation, as have the previous installer updates.
