102 years ago today, the Australian and New Zealand Army Corps of the British Empire forces landed on the beaches of the Gallipoli peninsular, Dardanelles, Turkey. Two young nations, who answered the call-to-arms of the mother country, yet again where bloodied in the crucible of unimaginable torment that is war.

Some say that Gallipoli was the birth place of the Australian Nation. Others prefer to think that our great democracy is deserving of a birth far less tumultuous than that of an ill-fated, even crazy campaign that achieved nothing but defeat. Yet in the face of those overwhelming odds the fire of a beacon was kindled on the ashes of our peoples, culminating histories and set-a-blaze for all Australians and New Zealanders to follow. A beacon of courage, loyalty, mateship, tenacity and honour that to this day burns bright in the bellies of the citizens of our two small, yet proud countries.

To this day, both our countries honour and pay tribute to the sacrifice our ancestors made upon that altar of war, and each altar since. In the name of freedom, of loyalty, of security and the preservation of peace, or simply to help out the mate that fought beside him. Our men and women in uniform continue to serve our country with pride, and dignity. Often their service is rewarded with the curse of great physical and mental suffering that leaves them with no alternative but to continue to fight for the rest of their lives.

The AEF proudly honours the memories of those that have paid the ultimate sacrifice, and we pay tribute to all our returned and serving citizens. Standing beside those who continue to fight against the ghosts, and carry scars of battle earned defending our way of life for future generations.

    We will remember them. Always.

They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old:
Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn.
At the going down of the sun and in the morning,
    We will remember them.

I would like to pay a special tribute to AEF RtB today and hope he is well. I would also like to thank all current and former ADF members in the AEF for their magnificent service. I shouldn't forget our New Zealand cousins so thank you for your service as well.

As a nation I think we're dropping the ball when it comes to looking after our veterans. The RSL is in turbulent times, particularly in NSW at the moment, and government support nationwide is, as always, less than desirable.

Let's do our best to help our returning service men and women wherever we can. Actions as simple as a regular chat and a cuppa can really help some of these folks when they need it most. Don't let them suffer in silence, or alone.
